Chapter VI - The Paleo Perspectives Fitness Plan

Fitness Lessons from Our Paleolithic Ancestors

Just as our ancestors’ eating patterns formed the basic nutritional requirements of modern-day humans, their movement patterns set in stone how our bodies function physiologically and biomechanically. To grow, live, and age optimally, we must mimic the physical lifestyles of those who inhabited the earth for the first  99.6% of human existence. I’ll reiterate a phrase used earlier in this book: During that period, the only human occupations were hunting, gathering, and surviving.

Fitness Intensities

In 42 years of training sedentary beginners, elite professional athletes, and everyone in between, I
found that helping clients learn to train at the proper intensity is one of my biggest challenges. While executing a fitness plan for optimum results, remember that your goal is to train right up to the limit of your ability and capacity without going over the top and overtraining. As it turns out, some of the more timid and unsure persons I introduced to training developed into some of the most dedicated, hardworking, and intense fitness enthusiasts I’ve known.

Here is a fitness tip I impressed upon my clients: stop referring to your exercise sessions as “working out.” Up the commitment and start referring to them as training sessions. Training implies effort, dedication, and goal orientation. Nutrition and physical activity are the two lifestyle factors that influence our wellness status and, ultimately, the rate at which we age—adding even the smallest amount of physical activity to a sedentary lifestyle results in significant rewards. Becoming fitness savvy and working to personalize and intensify your fitness-training regimen can be a boon to health, vitality, and productive longevity.

Exercise Options

Most people believe that they have two main options regarding exercise for fitness: aerobic training and resistance (weight) training. I’ll briefly explain them, including bodyweight exercises and a resistance training component. A third option, HIIT training, may offer a “best of all worlds" scenario as we attempt to lose body fat and condition our bodies and minds.
