The Skinny on Fat in Today’s World

As I enter my 42nd year as an expert in energy balance and weight control, believe me when I say, “Even if you have failed to lose fat permanently after multiple attempts, it is likely not your fault.” The truth is that diets don’t work, and modern weight loss advice has failed us.” Research paints a grim picture of weight loss success in the U.S. According to the article “Comparison of Strategies for Sustaining Weight Loss: The Weight Loss Maintenance Randomized Controlled Trial” [1], as many as 108 million people may be on diets in the U.S. now. It’s also estimated that 95% of all diets fail, and dieters typically make four or five attempts per year.

From this point forward, we’ll stop using the term weight loss. Our only concern now is losing body fat. I will describe the simple science and functional dynamics between energy balance and fat control that I’ve used to
successfully guide hundreds of people through this process. To make this work for you, follow the validated science and power through the process and smash your fat lossand all other goals. It is time to DECIDE, COMMIT, FOCUS, and then you will ACHIEVE.

Weight Loss Is Stressful

The human body is a biological machine with a brain ingeniously designed for survival. When dieting, your body perceives losing weight as threatening and stressful. This reaction activates genetically programmed protections against starvation. When we choose to withhold calories, our bodies begin to enter a state called survival panic. Neither our anatomy nor physiology knows that there’s a Hardee’s down the street. You’re huddled in a cave, starving as far as your body knows. Losing excess body fat while maintaining lean body mass is a positive experience that rejuvenates the body and mind. That is not an easy task. Several parameters must be met for the body to lose fat while sparing muscle. If muscle is sacrificed during weight loss, the body perceives that something is going horribly wrong. The process is successful if body fat is lost and muscle is spared. In this scenario, the body is rewarded and soothed rather than stressed, strained, and inflamed.
